Dear CRD Students and Families,
Thanks to your commitment to the health and safety of our CRD community, our collective vaccination rate is 95%. In the coming weeks, we have several students who will get their second dose of the vaccine. We look forward to reaching a fully vaccinated campus by mid-November.
Please keep in mind that despite our vaccination rate, we will continue to exercise caution to reduce the risk of being infected with the Delta variant and possibly spreading it to others. Our CRD community will continue to wear a mask indoors and follow CDC Guidelines, including the ones noted below:
Screening testing, ventilation, handwashing, and respiratory etiquette, staying home when sick and getting tested, contact tracing in combination with quarantine and isolation, and cleaning and disinfection are also important layers of prevention to keep our school community safe.
Students, teachers, and staff should stay home when they have signs of any infectious illness. Please contact Nurse Yhajaira directly if you have questions or concerns about the best course of action.
We remain committed to ensuring that our students have a full year of in school instruction. To do so, we will monitor each activity and event closely and relax where possible, the safeguards we have in place to allow for more community time and student interaction to take place.

Gracias a su compromiso con la salud y la seguridad de nuestra comunidad CRD, nuestra índice de vacunación colectiva es de 95%. The Day of the Dead or Día los Muertos is a holiday celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November. It originated and is mostly observed in Mexico but also in other countries. Although associated with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.
Traditions connected with the holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras and Aztec marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl, building home altars called ofrendas with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these items as gifts for the deceased. The celebration is not solely focused on the dead, as it is also common to give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls, to share traditional pan de muerto with family and friends.
El Día de los Muertos es una celebración el 1 y 2 de noviembre. Se originó y se observa principalmente en México, pero también en otros países. Aunque está asociado con las celebraciones católicas del Día de Santos y el Día de los Difuntos, tiene un tono mucho menos solemne y se presenta como una fiesta de celebración alegre en lugar de duelo. Las celebraciones de varios días involucran a familiares y amigos que se reúnen para presentar sus respetos y recordar a los amigos y familiares que han fallecido. “FET GEDE” is a Haitian version of the Mexican Day of the Dead. It is also one of the most important celebrations in the Haitian Vodou religious calendar. In 2003 Haitian Vodou was officially declared one of the two official religions practiced in Haiti, the other being Roman Catholicism. “As a scholar of Haitian studies, I take this opportunity to educate people about the religious beliefs and practices of Haitian Vodou. This year students will honor an ancestor (any human who has passed away), by creating a “Boutey” – Dr, Greenough-Hodges
In Haiti, many people follow Catholic tradition and honor Catholic Saints on their ancestor bottles. These types of bottles have prayer cards glued to the bottles and have decorative colors and other creative touches, inspired by the life of the saint. Ancestor bottles for families are diverse and are quite beautiful and personal creations. The Aesthetic Literacy students (Freshmen) and French I students (Juniors) will make ancestor bottles as part of a cultural study in both classes. En 2003, el Vudú Haitiano fue declarado oficialmente una de las dos religiones oficiales practicadas en Haití, la otra siendo Catolicismo Romano. “Como he estudiado los estudios haitianos, aprovecho esta oportunidad para educar a nuestra comunidad sobre las creencias y prácticas religiosas del vudú haitiano. Este año los estudiantes honrarán a un antepasado (cualquier ser humano que ya falleció), creando un “Boutey” – Dra. Greenough-Hodges
En Haití, muchas personas siguen la tradición Católica y honran a los santos católicos en las botellas de sus antepasados. Este tipo de botellas tienen estampas de oración pegadas a las botellas y tienen colores decorativos y otros toques creativos, inspirados en la vida del santo. Las botellas ancestrales para familias son diversas y son creaciones bastante hermosas y personales. Los estudiantes de Aesthetic Literacy (grado 9) y los estudiantes de Francés I (grado 11) harán botellas de antepasados como parte de un estudio cultural en ambas clases. The time is approaching us and the girls soccer tryouts will be Friday, October 22nd from 4pm to 6pm and Saturday October 23rd from 8am to 10am. Make arrangements to be there on time. Please make sure you have your TAPPS form turned in before tryouts. Both days are mandatory. UT Southwestern (a CWSP job partner) is recruiting participants for their RadXup study. It encourages COVID-19 testing and corrects misinformation within the Latino community. Specifically, the study is wanting to learn more about Covid-19 habits and beliefs in our area and will provide free testing while also being able to compensate participants for their time. Participants will receive $50 for the first visit, $20 for each referral, and $20 for a follow-up call (total of up to $190). Please see the flyer for more details and contact information HERE

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Our CRD community chooses to raise awareness because we all have a role in bullying prevention and being united under our values to promote kindness, inclusion and acceptance. Bullying has the ability to leave devastating and often long-term impacts such as, but not limited to, decreased self-esteem, increased rates of anxiety, depression and suicide. Everyone has the right to feel safe and supported. Be on the lookout for upcoming initiatives and opportunities to become involved surrounding this important topic from the Counseling Department throughout October.
Octubre es el Mes Nacional de Prevención del Bullying/Acoso. Nuestra comunidad de CRD elige aumentar la conciencia porque todos tenemos un papel en la prevención de bullying y estar unidos bajo nuestros valores para promover la bondad, la inclusión y la aceptación.
